svmotion from datacenter1(local storage) to datacenter2(san storage)

Dear all,

Bit of a wierd one!... I would like to move a vm from an esx server which is stored on local storage to another esx server in another datacenter to san storage. I have done this when the virtual machine is powered down but was wondering if there is anyway to do this whilst the vm is still on? Or will it not work due to not having a vmotion interface on the esx server running on local storage?

thanks,

Paul

You will need vmotion working between the servers before svmotion can move a running machine.

I never used Svmotion (soon !) but if I remembered well, you cannot VMotion to another ESX while you SVmotion to another datastore.

SVmotion realizes a self-VMotion on the ESX which is running the VM, so do the SVmotion and then a normal VMotion to an other ESX.

Demz makes a good point, you will need to issue the storage to your current host and then perform a svmotion otherwise its a cold move.
