"sh: can't access tty: job control turned off".

ESX 3.5 server as cold booted due to power outrage. now service console, debug mode and troubleshooting mode only boot to "sh: can't access tty: job control turned off". and the keyboard is unresponsive. Are there any grub commands I could run?

mounting root failed. dropping into basic maintenance shell.

busybox v0.60.5 (2007.10.10-06) built-shell

You can try to use ESX boot CD to do a simple upgrade procedure.

This could fix your system.

If not you have to troubleshooting Linux filesystem (in the COS) to find missing file.

But in this case probably is faster to do a reinstallation without repartition your disk and without wipe your VMFS volumes.
