I have resolved the connectivity issue that I had after an upgrade (of a non production server)
No the ESX host was licensed as a local host then i imported license file all OK!
Now when connecting to it from Virtual Center i get this error: There are not enough licenses to perform the operation.
I can connect to it directly without issue.
I changed the licensing to point it to our license server but still the same issue.
I am not having a good day...
Many times I have had problems with licensing, not showing enough, unable to add another host, unable to add a new VM, ect...... It is very frustrating. I created a check list to follow step by step. I have used this many times, and it works every time. They key is stopping and starting services in a particular order. Allways remember, if you are unsure of a process or procedure test in Dev first............ Good luck.
To successfully change a License File for VMware
Log into the Virtual Center Console and make note of the current licenses.
Log out of Virtual center
Download the file from VMWare site
Put the file in the directory structure for the License Server
example C:\program files\vmware\vmware license server\licenses\<file_name.lic>
Open the License Manger
Programs > VMWare > VMWare License Server > VMware License SErver Tools
Select the "Config Services" Tab at the top right
Click "Browse" on the "Path to the License file" option
Point to the file that you downloaded from the VMware site
Click on the "Save Service" button within the same window
Select the "Start/Stop/Reread" tab at the top
Click on "Stop Server"
Click on "Start Server"
Click on "Reread License File"
Wait until you see the message at the bottom of the window
“Reread server License File Completed”
Open the Server Services from within the Administrator Tools.
Restart the "VMWare License Server" service
Restart the "VMWare Virtual Center Server" service
Log into Virtual Center
Click on Admin > and select the Licensing tab at the top.
Right click in the white space below the license columns and select refresh
You should now see New the licenses.
How are you licensed server based or do you have a license server?
Both I believe. These servers were licensed per server.
I activated them then pointed them to the licensing server.
However in both modes it did not work.
Does Virtual Center need license seats free to connect to more servers also?
Did you try restarting the license server? Also how many licenses does it show as available from VC?
Where can I ee how many are free please?
It says now: Unable to acquire license because license source in unavailable: The license server manager has not been started yet, the wrong port@host or license file is being used, or the port or hostname in th license file has been changed.
None of which is the case I might add.
You can see the license numbers from VC, you can click on view -> administration -> licenses.
Then from that ESX host can you ping the license server IP (I assume it's the same as the VC) from that host?
I think it's more of a reachable destination problem than a license server problem.
Hi under view -> administration -> licenses I see red cross against this server with no licensed features although if you connect directly to the server it is fine.
All IP connectivity is fully open.
OK, but from the VC view administration, tell me what the Virtual Center Licensed Edition is, and you should see the port (27000@) for your license server listed here.
Then in that list it should show for each licensed feature what the remaining quantity is. The VC agent, you should have 2 free, do you see this?
I know your IP may be fully open, but verify from the ESX host if you can ping it, there may be a problem from that HOST. A ping will verify you can ping the IP and the fully qualified name.
Hi I will check the license free count shortly.
I can however confirm that all IP and UDP is open between the 2.
