newbie licensing question: not enough licenses installed

dear esx gurus

i just installed a eval esx 301 version on a 2 cpu host. then i installed the license server and the virtual center server on the same w2k3 box. i generated a a licence server based licence file and installed it. when i try to power on the first virtual machine i receive a message:

there are not enough licenses installed to perform the operation. i checked

configuraton -> licensed features:

use license server points to the correct host

host license file: none

esx server licence type: unlicensed.

i can't change the esx server licence type to 'standard' this feature is greyed out.

thank you for a hint

not sure , but after generating the lic file open VI client directly to the ESX host if you do not have a VC server. then under configuration pick licensing and click properties right top and browse to lic file to import it into esx host.

click on edit button after that to enable license file options

maybe this point you in direction to look

Make sure your EVAL version also has licenses for VirtualCenter. If it doesn't then you won't be able to import anythng into VC.

Are the #[/b]'s in your license file? If so I would remove those. make sure there is no extra line breaks before the first line in the file and I wouldn't have any between individual licenses.

What is the name of your license file?

Did you identify the license file when you first installed virtual center 2.0?

Respectfully,

Kaizen!

the name of the file i downloaded was:

license_20061012062155.lic. during installation of the vc i pointed to this file and the application accepted it without problems.

Hey Tim,

I thought I saw something in the install documents that suggested naming the file something specific. I don't' know if the name would be enough to cause a problem but it may be worth a try. I think the documentation suggested:

vmware.lic

Kaizen!

My license file is vmware.lic and it is located in c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware License Server

The file itself starts off like this:

SERVER this_host ANY 27000

VENDOR VMWARELM port=27010

USE_SERVER

INCREMENT PROD_VC VMWARELM 2005.05 permanent 1 \[/code]

No spaces at the beginning of the file, no spaces between the licenses, and no space at the end of the file. I also don't have any #[/b]'s in the file. This file should not have been created with Word. Use something like Wordpad.

I have the exact same problem. In the short term I changed to a host based license to get my esx server up with vm's. But I have not fixed this issue or found any posting that would lead me to an answer. Help

so far i was not able to run esx on the prefered license server based basis. so i go for host based licensing. is there any need to install the licence server if i choose host based licensing ? what about the the virtual center licensing. host based licensing only provides licences for:

INCREMENT ESX_FULL_BACKUP VMWARELM 2005.05 12-nov-2006 uncounted \

can i run the virtual center management server anyway ?

You will needed the license server for any VC provided services. VMotion/HA/DRS.

So, are you saying that cleaning up your license file to remove the #[/b]'s and extraneous spacing (if it existed), then restarting the license server service or rereading the license didn't work?

i just downloaded a new eval lic file and removed all #comments. same problem.

still the message: not enough licenses installed. performing a status check on the license server reports no error.
