Hi guys, wonder if you could help with the following.
I installed Update 4 on top of a native ESX3.5U3 installation, all went fine, no errors during the update.
After I rebooted the server I had no more storage adapters, all my vmfs seems to be gone.
It´s a ML110G5 HP server with a SATA disk controller (no RAID) with three disks attached: 250Gb OS and VMFS, 500Gb vmfs and 500Gb vmfs.
when I look at the partition I see this:
Disk /dev/hdc: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdc1 1 60801 488383968+ fb Unknown
Disk /dev/hda: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux
/dev/hda2 14 650 5116702+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 651 719 554242+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda4 720 30401 238420665 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 720 973 2040223+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda6 974 30401 236380352+ fb Unknown
Disk /dev/hdb: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1 1 60801 488383968+ fb Unknown
Actually this looks OK to me, but the system is just missing its storage adapters. The vmfs/devices/disks/ directory is empty.
I already tried to set the advanced LVM.Resignaturing on 1 and rescan for new storage, but since I don´t have storage adapters it has no use.
Anyone seen this, how can I troubleshoot, best options, solutions, anything.
Thanks.
I am having the same problem too. I updated ESX from update 2 to update 4. I also did not get any errors while doing the update. I am running on HP ProLiant DL320 G5 with two 500Gb SATA (No RAID). I cannot figure out what the problem is. I need help.
Thanks.
I have had a similar issue with my Dell PE2950 with a Perc 5i controller, following the upgrade using Update Manger it worked fine, next time i powered it down it wouldn't boot. So, this being my test box i thought i'd rebuild it, but, booting from the U4 disk it doesn't load the drivers and fails to show any disks for the install. So i installed U3 and then upgraded but each time i subsequently reboot it loses the disk, as it's test i have tried ESX3.5i U4, and this works fine for me so it is obviously a driver issue. what you will see during the installer is an option to load special system drivers, like the F6 in windows install, so i would suggest obtaining the Linux driver for the controller in your system and going with this option.
You might want to follow this thread, similar issue reported: http://communities.vmware.com//thread/205655?tstart=0
I've seen quite a few threads regarding this issue, wondering if this is a bug or only for specific cases?
