kipmi0 is using 98% of CPU

Hi,

kipmi0 is using 98% of the CPU in ESX 3.5. Any idea what exactly is this process and how to make it low?

PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT %CPU %MEM TIME CPU COMMAND

2324 root 39 19 0 0 0 RWN 95.6 0.0 16651m 0 kipmi0

2325 root 39 19 0 0 0 RWN 1.9 0.0 2258m 0 kipmi1

Unfortunatly the embeded links no longer work but there is aworkaround procedure detailed.

This is your hardware health monitoring. Typically, the pegasus service is what runs this, so restarting that should bring that back to normal.

Hi KJB,

thanks for the suggession, As i am very new to ESX, can you provide more info on this.

"service pegasus restart" will do from the root access login is it? What will happen to my running VMs on the host server? or will any other impact is there at this point of time?

That command has to be run on the ESX server console, and requires root access. It will restart your health monitoring service and will not affect any vm's.

Did your CPU utilization go back down? If you're not using the health status, you can leave these down.

Hi,

Thanks for the inputs, Still the CPU usage has not come down and hence we thought of upgrading to ESX 3.5 Update 3. Any inputs for this and can you let me know any easy link to update the same.

Present version is 3.5 Update 1. screenshot attached.

Have you tried to upgrade BIOS and/or system firmware?

Are you using update manager? That would be the easiest. Also, you can download an update 3 tarball image that will allow you to update over an ssh connection for ESX. For ESXi, you can also use vi infrastructure update.
