how to add sata raid lun?

Hi everyone

We have just board a ESX 3.5 licens for our HP DL180 G5 server and installed it on the server. We have a HP E200 controller installed with 2 x SAS disks for the VMware server files (raid 1), and 6 x 450 GB SATA disks (raid 10) for VM files.

The problem is that we can't add sata lun for some reason, and since we have no error message it's kind of hard to figure out. It simply dosen't show up in the "add storage wizard". I know sata was not supported for some years ago, but that must have been fixed a long time ago? I have seen a lot of "guides" on the Internet that shows how to install ESXi on sata disks, but it's really not what I am trying to do. Smiley Happy Vmware is installed and running, and the controller is recognized by VMware.

What to do?

Thanks for the link, but it does not seam to be the same problem as I am having.

From what I understand, the other guys could see the lun in the service console by useing the command "fdisk -l" but here is what I get:

# fdisk -l+

Disk /dev/cciss/c0d0: 73.3 GB, 73372631040 bytes

255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 8920 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

+ Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System+

/dev/cciss/c0d0p1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux

/dev/cciss/c0d0p2 14 650 5116702 83 Linux+

/dev/cciss/c0d0p3 651 8584 63729855 fb Unknown

/dev/cciss/c0d0p4 8585 8920 2698920 f Win95 Ext'd (LBA)

/dev/cciss/c0d0p5 8585 8653 554211 82 Linux swap

/dev/cciss/c0d0p6 8654 8907 2040223 83 Linux+

/dev/cciss/c0d0p7 8908 8920 104391 fc Unknown

From what I can read from the others answers I sould be able to see a /dev/cciss/c0d1in the service console on which I should be able to create some new partitions? How should I be able to work with something that can not be seen in any way? Smiley Happy

Wup, I now see that 2TB is max size, so I tryed splitting the lun in two, and now I can see them both in VMware. The first new lun could I add without any problems, but the last one I could not. Now I get the error "Unable to read partition information from the disk" and for that problem I know that your link can solve my problem. Smiley Happy
