hard drive resizing in guests...frustrated

I installed a 50GB CentOS 5.3 guest. A few days after, I decided I wanted more space, so I went into edit settings and changed the HD space from 50GB to 200GB. Clicked on ok and it changed it.

I reset the guest OS and it still says 50GB....

Now I have 200GB of my real HD array made useless because the size of the 'storage' is reduced by 150GB, thinking the guest has 200GB....

What is the problem and how can I fix this without losing the guest OS? (spend a week setting it up!!)

You need to extend the partition inside the guest OS. For Windows VMs, we use diskpart either from within the guest or from a WinPE boot CD (for the system partition). For a Linux-based guest, you could use something like a GParted Live CD to boot the VM and adjust the partition:

Hope this helps.

Doug.

Check what will say fdisk /dev/sda. I suppose you'll see 200GB hard drive with 50GB partition on it.

So you just need to resize partition with gparted for example.

Remember what you have done - by increasing the size of the disk you have just added unpartiitioned extra space to the disk - I do not CentOS will dynamically resize the original partition to utilize this space - you will have increase the 50 GB partition to include the extra 150 GB
