error loading operating system

Hi,

I have a physical machine that has been backup using acronis. I used the acronis to convert to .vmdk (esx format).

I try upload the folder to the datastore. I create a new vm and select the existing hard disk for the windows 2003 and it shows "error loading operating system" when power on the vm.

What is the possible caused?

I don't know too much about acronis, but maybe you would have better luck using VMware vCenter Converter

Hi Chris,

As Troy suggested, I would try VM converter,

also see if this thread can be useful to you:

Hi,

The customer actually bought acronis as a backup of the physical server. Thus for backup purpose, the acronis console manager allow you to convert to .vmdk format (esx format).

Is the above a supported format in esx 3.5?

I would confirm that it is a VMDK format that ESX 3.5 understand and not for a previous version or another product - I too would follow Troy's suggestion -

Hi,

VMDK format is not by definition ESX compatible - Try to copy a VMware workstationimage to ESX and just run it... Will not work. Even then you have to use Converter. I suspect the VMDK format you can create is a workstation compatible format.
