cold migrate converted RDM to VMDK files?

I just performed a cold migration of VM to simply relocate the OS vmdk files to another VMFS volume. after finished I noticed the two RDMs are now VMDK files? Lucky for me the volume was over 400GB or I would have run out of space! Is there a better way to do this in the future to keep this from happening?

Detached the RDMs from the VM before migration and re-attached once completed.

yea thank god the RDMs weren't really affected. I just re-attached them
