The easiest way to create a VMFS partition is to do this throught the VI client - goto Configuration -> Storage and in here you should have a blue link in the top right hand saying "add storage" this will then start a wizard that will scan the storage adapters (SCSI and HBA) and show you any availble space that can be formatted to VMFS - make sure you know the device number for your local storage adapter so you format the correct disk space.

MSCS recommends RDM for clusters in the box but I have found it successful using vmdks. As long as these are on the same host.

You can use RDM which is actually not a volume per sey and is not formatted with VMFS3.. You can also use a vmdk file but you will need to provision the disk file using the eagerzeroedthick option from vmkfstools. Once the disk file is created you will need to add it to the servers as scsi 1:0 which will create a new controller afterward to fulfill the scsi1: requirement. Once that is complete you will need to setup virtual or physical settings on the new SCSI controller and then add this disk to the second host repeating the same steps for the scsi controller setting.

If this is a bit confusing I can give you more details.

Help me help you by scoring points.
