changing the machine name of a esx host

hi i tried to change the host name of an esx machine.

I did the following:

1) I had modified the /etc/hosts file to

127.0.0.1 localhost name2

::1 localhost

2) I had chnaged the entry in /etc/sysconfig/network as

NETWORKING=yes

HOSTNAME= name2

IPV6_AUTOCONF=no

NETWORKING_IPV6=no

After this I had restarted the machine.

I am able to ping the machine using th IP address but I am unable to ping the machine using machine name .

Did I miss out anything?

even ping -a (DOS) does not return the machine name.

Sounds like a DNS issue.

Check to see if yor ESX server is configured to communicate with your DNS server for name resolution.

just configure using VI Client to direct ESX or vCenter, and change hostname :

1. klik ESX

2. Configure

3. DNS n Routing - n change hostname, reminder u must restart the ESX server

4. Update your DNS Server or all /etc/hosts n vCenter your ESX existing.

your link was useful but it did not resolve the issue.

I followed the steps give n in the link:

I found that GUI has my host name as host2 and it was not editable.

In the link it said " 6) Update the etc/opt/vmware/vpxa/vpxa.cfg file to reflect the new settings."

I do not know what entry needs to be added here, i added an element to the file but it did not work out ?

can you suggest what might be the possible value needs to be added ?

I am using a vSphere Client GUI. I am using a evaluation version.

When I click on the host, select the configuration, click on DNS & Routing Click on properties. The hostname is not editable, hostname displayed is the same as the one I had given in the scripts /etc/hosts & /etc/sysconfig/network.

Entering into maintenance mode doesn't help.

The host name is still unchangeable.

I'm late to this party but I found your thread while trying to solve this problem myself. My solution was to select "Use the following DNS server address" and fill in the fields with my own DNS server IP addresses instead of leaving the default "Obtain DNS server address automatically" selected in the "DNS and Routing Configuration" section of the vSphere Client GUI.
