I have had this problem for a while on one of my ESX hosts where it would give this problem for a few minutes and then go away again. I retried the whole HA config last week and from then this one server could not get itself into the HA group.
I checked all the published ishues (make sure DNS and shortname works, make sure you can ping your gateway .....) nothing worked. Then I remembered that a while back I added a second ip address on a different NIC for console access from another network (the guys used this to vmconvert servers). I removed that ip on the nic and reconfigured the HA and it worked 100% the first time.
So it looks like ESX3.5 don't know witch NIC to use if it enables HA (even though the DNS and Host names do point to the ip range on the correct NIC)
