Why update

Hi all

Can any one please tell me why we need to update the esx server. I have a esx 3.5 server with update1

can i upgrade from update1 to update3?

what is the advantages and disadvanges?

just like any OS, patching is a critical part of managing your environment. Patches are released in categories of severity. So, yes, you need to keep your ESX hosts patched just like any other OS.

Going from U1 to U3 should not be a problem.

the advantages are that patches fix security, critical and general problems.

The advantages would be not encountering any fo the bugs listed in the patch releases. If you dont have any of the fixed issues, and you have other methods to mitigate the security issues, you wouldn't need to patch/update.

As Matt said if you have other means than that is up to you. It's ultimately your environment and you need to manage it the best way you see fit.
