It is just like any other system, windows or linux. If you run out of RAM and swap, the system grinds to a very slow pace. This could cause HA to fire in the case of an ESX host. Just like any other system, RAM and swap are used all the time. I guess that adding RAM, but not swap could help a system with poor performance. Adding swap would benefit the server even more. Adding just RAM is less "bad" than doing nothing, especially if there is no free disk space to allocate to a swap partition.

BTW, please note that 800 MB is the maximum.

I agree with that...the "free" command shows me 75MB of swap in use on a ESX with 272 MB service console. I have HP management agents 8.1.0, HP DataProtector agent 6.0 and HP UPS Agent 4.5 running. The system is HA enabled and I don't have issues.

When swap size would be a lot higher and free memory in service console near 0, then I'd increase it. Of course what is 512 MB compared to all the memory most ESX servers have? 512 MB seems like a nice compromise to work with and swap diskspace set 1600MB just to be sure.

Dear Guru,

Any website that have Vmware recommendation on the partition?

In addition, if assume the default swap is 544 MB and the current service is 272, is it possible to change the service console from 272 to 800 MB if the existing swap is 544 MB? What is the impact?

Thanks

Appendix "A" of the installation guide lists partitioning information. Also, most of the hardware vendors have their take as well. As for the swap, a best practice is to allocate twice the amount of RAM for swap. That means you should allocate 1600MB, since the max RAM is 800MB. I think they cover this in the Install & Config course as well.

Pardon my ignorance as I'm not functional with Linux commands in the least bit...but how do I go about changing my swap?

I set it to 800MB so that any future add-ons that I might want to run in the SC can be accomodated.
