Vmware HA - Current Failover Capacity?

Where does the VMware HA current failover capacity get its information from? My setup indicates that the current failover capacity is 4 host. I find it hard to believe that I can afford to loose 4 hosts at one time.

The current failover capacity is calculated based on the number of VMs running and the resources being provided by the hosts in the cluster - it is based on the reservation settings of the vms - HA use the settings to calculate the number of available slots - you can learn more form the resource management guide - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/r35u2/vi3_35_25_u2_resource_mgmt.pdf

VC calulates the failover capacity on the default values for allocated RAM and CPU for each VM being 256Mb RAM and 256MHz.

This can be changed in the advanced HA settings to allow VC to better work out your correct failover capacity of the cluster. Add the following as average values for RAM and CPU allocation in your VMs

das.vmMemoryMinMB=xxxx

das.vmCpuMinMhz=xxxx
