Vlans

Hi, I want to create 2 vlans for the ESX. I created on The Nortel 5510 a new VLAN address 192.168.1.x/24 and the defualt VLAN is 10.10.60.x/24.The server has 2 nics one connected to the 10.10.60.x lan and the other connected the 192.168.1.x lan. On the ESX i created a separated Network with vSwitch for each VLAN. How do i continue from here ? i want to be able route between those Vlans.

Virtual switches are unable to route as they are L2 devices. You'll need to setup routing external to the ESX host.

Personally I would create just one vSwitch and team the two adapters, so you have a fault tolerant setup.

Next create a seperate portgroup for each VLAN.

The switchports connected to the ESX nics should be configured as Trunk ports.

As for the routing question, it's like allready been said by Gary. Routing is done on Layer3 and since the vSwitch is at Layer2, the routing must be done outside of the ESX host.

It Could be Windows 2003 acting as a router ?

You can dual-home a VM and make it perform NAT and routing functions. For many security and performance reasons, this solution would not be optimal.
