Verifying steps for replacing ESX host?

We need to replace one of our hosts and I just wanted to make sure I'm doing the right steps. I haven't done this before, so here is what I was going to do:

  1. Vmotion VM's from current ESX host

  2. Remove ESX host from HA cluster

  3. Delete host from VC

  4. Shutdown ESX host

  5. move cables to new host (which is already configured with IP)

  6. Power on and add to VC

  7. VMotion VM's back

Does that sound right? Will the licenses release when the current host is deleted? Thank you in advance!

Hello,

If you have Update 2 you can use EVC to possibly get around this problem.

The ESX host has to be in maintenance mode before you can remove it but every thing else is fine. yes the licenses will release.

Hello,

It does not need to be in maintenance mode for this to work. Just make sure all powered on and powered off VMs are migrated off the host.

Thanks! Got it done, but now dealing with VMotion incompatibility between AMD opteron 280 dual core and the new AMD opteron 8354 quad. (DL385 G2 <-> DL585 G5). Geez. May have to revert back Smiley Sad

FYI... updating to U2 solved the CPU compatibility issue. Thanks!
