VSS enabled restore

Hi,

In the Virtual machine backup guide for ESX 3.5 U2, it is mentioned that Consolidated backup can take application consistent VM snapshots through vmware tools with VSS components. So I assume that the VM snapshot will contain a VSS snapshot of the application data too...

However, the document does not talk about restore mechanisms for applications.. If you restore the VM image, will the application data be automatically recovered from the VSS snapshot or this has to be manually done?

Thanks,

Prasad.

From what I have read..there is no VSS restore with VCB. One of the 3rd party vendors brings this up in some of their marketing materials and claims that they are the only company to provide for VSS restores. However, I am not 100% sure it really matters. VSS is great for doing online backups, but when I do a restore I am usually restoring the entire server, not a single file. Don't need VSS for that since the server is already in a powered-off state.
