what does it mean application-level quiescing? does it talk to vss aware applications such as exchange, sql, sharepoint to tell them to pause their activity? does anyone have a better understanding on this? thanks!

VSS Quiescing
Consolidated Backup now uses VSS for quiescing on ESX Server 3.5 Update 2
hosts when backing up Windows Server 2003, Vista, and Windows Server
2008 virtual machines. To use this feature, VSS components must be
installed on the virtual machine as part of updated VMware Tools. The
VSS components in the tools perform application-level quiescing on
Windows Server 2003 and file system-level quiescing on Windows Vista
and Windows Server 2008 virtual machines.
A vss module is included with the new vmware tools. It will perform vss snapshots to get a consistent snapshot of applications. You'll have to take that at it its word for now, as I haven't tested it, but the answer to your question would be yes. It's using MS based tools to create a consistent snapshot of applications using VSS, so a more reliable snapshot can be created.

If I remember correclty when VSS support was added it didn't include 64-bit Windows. Does anyone know if this has changed with vSphere, or if there were any VSS driver suport changes at all with vSphere?
Thanks!
