VM Backups

HI

Can anyone tell me what the preferred method of restoring a VM is?

I am using Backup Exec to backup my VM's to tape (I am testing with both sparse files and monolithic files)

If I attempt a restore from the tape by copying the backups onto my ESX hosts (/vmfs/volumes) and amending the catalog file and vmdk file names I get errors suggesting that I have manually edited the files.

Should I be just using vmconvertor or VCBrestore to restore the vm and not attempt to manipulate the VM file manually?

Any best pratices would be useful.

Many thanks

Russell

Converter would be the least error-prone method of doing the restores from a fullVM backup.

i would agree that Converter is the way to go, i would also expect that Symantec as the vendor would have support process documents available to advise on potential/supported methods for restores.

HI

thianks for the responses, I am testing the restore with vm convertor and it does seem to be the simpliest method.

Symantec do publish a restore procedure but it is around restoreing the file from tape back to disk then using vcbrestore.

Many thanks

Russell.
