VI3 VLAN capability vs Layer2/3 Switch

Hello,

we have a IBM BladeCenter with Nortel Layer 2/3 Switch.

THe ESX Blades have 2 Network Interfaces.

Besides the ESX blades, some few blades have conventional OS and need to be directly hooked to one of the VLAN`s.

Wald should be considered BEST practice to connect this setup to a Corporate Backbone/Core Switch ?

1. Configure the VLAN stuff inside the Layer 2/3 Switch entirely.

2. Configure the VLAN stuff inside the Layer 2/3 Switch only for the blades with conventional OS and do passtrough for the trunk from the coreswitch and configure the VLAN`s via ESX portgroups.

I`m not very deep into VLAN/Networking, so sorry if this question sounds dumb Smiley Happy

regards

roland

Do you really need different VLANs for VMs? If yes - 2.

Otherwise let guys from networking team do all the VLAN stuff.
