VI3.0.2 & HP SIM 7.8

Appologies for posting something on HPSIM again, but after spending 4 hours looking thru the forums, i still cant get this to work.

I am attempting to setup HP SIM agents on our hosts for the first time.

I am running 3.0.2 and have gone thru the install of hpmgmt-7.8.0-vmware3x.tgz on a few of my hosts. i can hit the SMH via https://<hostname>:2381 and can login with the root account just fine.

But when i hit this page, it shows that no agents are there, or no data. it says "no failed/degraded items"

our SIM management server also does not populate any information when i discover these servers. very generic, like it cannot pull any data.

From my understanding this hpmgmt tgz file that i have installed should install all of the agents, please correct me if i am wrong. Could this also be SNMP configured incorrectly?

i have been entered everything i can think of in the snmp.conf file and restarted snmpd after my changes, but nothing i do there corrects this.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi,

did you add the following entries at the end of your /etc/snmp.conf?

>8

dlmod cmaX /usr/lib/libcmaX.so

rwcommunity bcwacomm 127.0.0.1

rocommunity bcwacomm 127.0.0.1

>8

I think the latest version 7.9.x does it automatically.

kind regards,

Reinhard

ps: Award points if you find answers helpful. Thanks.

Yes, here is what i have in my snmpd/conf.

in my attempt to get this to work i have been adding everything i can think of, this file has changed numerous times in my troubleshooting, but there is its current status: (172.25.37.20 is the IP of our SIM server - sim01.domain.com

the other odd thing i notice is that when i hit the SMH and go to the settings page, it does not have any snmp link.

Thanks for your help!

more to add...

something i must have done must have finally corrected part of this problem, becaus i just did a "identify system" within HP SIM manager and it now recognizes the server as "Linux - VMware ESX Server"

this whole process started because there is an LED lit up on the front of this host, telling me there is some sort of hardware problem, and HP SIM tells me such that there is a High warning from the management server, but yet when i hit the SHM on the host itself, i still get "No Fialed/Degraded items"

any ideas?

thanks again.

I think you have an order issue, try moving the line

dlmod cmaX /usr/lib/libcmaX.so

to the beginning of your file, then restart snmp and then hpasm.

moved that line to the top of the file, restarted snmpd and hpasm

Systems Management Homepage for that host still shows "no failed/degraded items" even though SIM tells me there is a Major Health Status alert.

Thanks again for the help. i know it is just some small thing i am missing...

I had this problem because of issues with a modified snmpd.conf file. For a fix I answered no to the "Use existing snmpd.conf" question and used all of the known settings. In short, keep pressing enter.

BTW is 7.8 a supported version for 3.0.2?

thanks all-

i think i have this resolved due to all your help.

-verified snmp.conf was setup correctly (the file is exactly the same as my post from before, hasnt been modified since other than moving that one line that was asked)

-restarted services - really didnt help much

-ran thru a reconfigure on the host (service hpasm configure) answering yes to use existing snmp.conf file...this process restarts the services in the process, and now when hitting SMH it shows all the different agents and HP SIM is populating correctly. this of course assumes that you have the correct public/private strings setup within HP SIM.

i ran thru a identify systems and data collection once i ran the configure and now the data collection report is full too.

thanks to all who gave a hand with this.

Hmm. I don't know if the update cycle for the PDFs is longer than the web site, but the current supported agents show as 7.90 here:

I know the link has ESX 25 in the path, but it has sections for 3.5 on down. I am not sure if VMware will refuse support for 7.80, but good to check this page for new installs.
