VCB File Level Mount Fails when the Guest Operating System is Not Installed on the First Virtual Hard Disk

With the release of VCB 1.5 Update1, I see that VMware has not yet discovered the workaround for this so I figured I'd share. I've had success on both Windows2000 and 2003 guests by copying the system registry file to the same location on the disk marked as the first disk.

So, if your OS drive is listed first in Disk Management console and you get the error "Cannot query guest operating information. The mount directory is invalid" then copy c:\windows\system32\config\system to d:\windows\system32\config\system

You'll most likely need to do a MS Backup of system state and then restore the system state to a different directory. The mount results look like this:

Creating snapshot

Snapshot created, ID: snapshot-8442

Mount operation created snapshot.

Mount operation obtained backup info.

Opened disk: blklst://snapshot-8442[DR_LUN_55]

Opened disk: blklst://snapshot-8442[DR_LUN_55]

Proceeding to analyze volumes

Done mounting

Volume 1 mounted at c:\mnt\CBDPWA03\digits\1 (mbSize=34710 fsType=NTFS )

Volume 2 mounted at c:\mnt\CBDPWA03\digits\2 (mbSize=17359 fsType=NTFS )

Volume 1 also mounted on c:\mnt\CBDPWA03\letters\D

Volume 2 also mounted on c:\mnt\CBDPWA03\letters\C

Successfully mounted snapshot ssid:snapshot-8442 on mount point c:\mnt\CBDPWA03

Operation completed successfully
