Upgrade to ESX 3.5 U2 from 3.5

Hello,

Problably, it is a stupid question.

I do not have test environment of VirtialCenter and ESX.

But need quick answer by tomorrow morning, because I have to perform upgrade of VC and ESX this weekend.

In download site of VMware, there are three download files for ESX 3.5 Update 2.

1. ESX350-Update-02.zip

2. esx-3.5.0_Update_2-110268.iso

3. upgrade-from-esx3.5-3.5.0_Update_2-110268.zip

Which file should I choose for ?

I do not want to install ESX host from scrach, but upgrade to 3.5 Update 2.

If ESX350-Update-02.zip is a right one, I do not know how to apply the patch with ESXUPDATE.

In top of download patch page, I can see note no.2.

Q:

2. ESX350-Update01 (ESX350-Update02) is a roll-up bundle with no binary content.

It is used to install and verify all bundles in the ESX Server 3.5 Update 1 (Update 2) release.

If ESX350-Update01 (ESX350-Update02) is installed using VMware Update Manager,

or using an esxupdate depot, the installer will check that all Update 1 (Update 2) bundles are present,

install them, and verify that the host has been brought up to the ESX Server 3.5 Update 1 (Update 2) release level.

For installation using the esxupdate utility, ensure all patch bundles listed in the "Requires" column are downloaded to the esxupdate depot.

For installation using Update Manager, ensure the "ESX350-Update01" ("ESX350-Update02") bundle is added to the baseline for remediation.

Uq:

There are a lot of "Requires" files for ESX350-Update02.

If when UNZIP under /ver/updates/ directory, I do not understand directory structure for them.

I do not know how to create ESXUPDATE DEPOT this time, and how to execute ESXUPDATE.

I need instruction in detail, for example,

1. unzip files as follows

>>unzip /var/updates/ESX-Update-02.zip

>>unzip /var/updates/ESX350-200802303-SG.zip

>>unzip /var/updates/ESx350-200802304-SG.zip

:

:

2. change current directory to Update02 directory.

>>/cd /var/updates/ESX-Update-02/

3. Execute patching

>>ESXUPDATE -n update

Pls advise, anyone ?

Hello,

2. esx-3.5.0_Update_2-110268.iso

This is by and far the easiest approach. Instead of 'installing' take the 'upgrade' option after booting from the CDROM.

If you use VMware Update Manager, you can also use that to upgrade to Update 2 if you want. Also, and easier path.

If you burn esx-3.5.0_Update_2-110268.iso to a CD and then boot from that CD and choice upgrade as Edward indicated that approach is very straightforward. It won't re-install ESX, it will just do the upgrade.

Thank you very much for your advice.

Will try upgrade with CDROM.

And also, will have UpdateManager configuration for future server maintenance.

I used the http repository approach - works fine....

esxcfg-firewall -o 80,tcp,out,httpClient

vimsh -n -e /hostsvc/maintenance_mode_enter

esxupdate --force -n -r http://Maish
