We have some EXT3 formatted external USB 250GB drives that we use for transfering templates between our site and our customer sites.
When I plug in the device after a reboot of ESX 3.0.1 dmesg reveals the device and I can mount it, however if I remove the device then plug it in again, dmesg only shows:

and doesn't give me a device to mount.
If I mount against the old device, and do an fdisk, the following is displayed:

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 17848.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

followed by an 'l'

If I reboot the server, then no problem, but we can't keep rebooting these servers.
If anyone has any ideas what may be causing this or a possible solution like how to stop and start the USB damon, I'd be very grateful.
Server: 2x Proliant DL580 (clustered) with HP MSA1500 SAN. The USB disk is a Western Digital 'My Book'.
