Time sync on ESX 3.5 hosts

Hi

At present we are using Windows Time Services for time sync, but are trying to get away from that and use the VMware tools time sync function. We are trying to configure and use NTP on the hosts (which are ESX 3.5 update2). Can some one please guide me to the documentation that would have the procedure to do so.

I did come across the article on about Installing and Configuring NTP on VMware ESX hosts. Do I need to use this or has anyone successfully used the 'Time Configuration' feature in VC to sync time? What would be the recommended route of the two methods?

Here are some notes I made while setting up my systems.

Configure NTP on ESX Host

Use the VIC Console

This will work on ESX 3.5 (Not on ESX 3.02, those need .conf modified)

First enable the check box for the client configuration :

Go to VI Client under Configuration tab -> Time Configuration, click the Properties link, check the 'NTP Client Enabled' box under the NTP Configuration section, click the Options button and select Start and Stop with Host in the General section,

Then:

1. Select the Configuration Tab, and in the Software pane choose option Time

Configuration

2. Click Properties... option on the right-hand side of the VI Client

3. In the Time Configuration dialog box select the Options... button

4. In the NTP Server (noted) options dialog, select General and click the Start button

5. In the NTP Server (noted) options dialog box choose Add

6. Type in the FQDN or IP addresses of the NTP services you wish to synchronize with

1.2.3.5 Server1

1.2.3.4 Server2
