Swapfile location priority

Is it possible to set the swap file location per host to a datastore on the host then if that runs out of space keep the swap file with the virtual machine? If not what happens when a swap datastore runs out of space?

I suppose you mean VM swapfile.

Is it possible to set the swap file location per host to a datastore on the host then if that runs out of space keep the swap file with the virtual machine?

No, you can choose a different location on the single VM, or at cluster level.

If not what happens when a swap datastore runs out of space?

You probably cannot power on new VM (depending on the needed swap size).

If you are not able to create a vmkernel swap file either with the VMs other files or on seperate storage you will not be able to start the VM -
