Svmotion from Virtual Center 2.5 and 3.5 gui?

All, I have a coworker who says he is able to svmotion via virtual center and the gui. We do not have any third party plugins installed. Is this possible? Was it included in an update? I was under the impression that you can only do it from the CLI unless you installed a third party plugin.

This was not introduced into the GUI until vSphere 4. If he is doing that through the GUI, there must be some other plugin installed.

What about when you migrate from one host to another and choose a different datastore? Isn't that storage vmotion and you can do that live correct?

As said it is likely a 3rd party GUI plugin

no, that is a cold migrate and does not utilize the vmkernel port. Totally different. Cold migrations are done over the service console network.

The only storage vmotion through the GUI in 3.5, is offline migration. Then you can choose a new host and new datastore, but the VM must be powered off. In V4, you can do this online through the GUI.

Troy, is it a cold migration even if the system is up and running?

a cold migration is performed while the VM is in a powered off state. A live migration (vmotion/svmotion) is performed while the VM is on-line.
