Storage Utilization - how can i see the workload

hello all,

i have 3 esx v3.01 servers connected to 2 hp msa500 g2 scsi subsystems.

how can i get the workload? i want to get this for further calculation about placing vm's on the storage's.

ok, i can watch the esxtop of each server, but i search a way to get a value off the whole storage.

The performance tab in VIC has some reasonable disk activity counters,

They normally do the job for me,

If you are using VC you can look at the Performance Tab for the ESX server in question and switch it to 'Disk' mode and you can see the utilization of every VMHBA on the system.

If you are using VIC attached to the host, you can see this as well.

When using esxtop... enter esxtop and then type 'd' to get a disk view to see utilization of all vmhba devices for the ESX server.

YES, you are right, but that's not what i want. with this tabs i get the load by each host but NOT the load by storage. i mean i want to get the load on the storage created by ALL hosts and NOT per host.

This will depend on your storage then. If you are using local disk what servers are you using? If you are using SAN what SAN are you using?

Select your DataCenter/Farm/Cluster then the Performance Tab and you will then see the overall load for all the hosts.

hi edward,

thats the problem. i get infos about cpu, memory or clusterservices, but nothing about disk.

i use 2 hp msa500 g2 systems. they are connected per scsi direct to the scsi controllers. for each esx-host is that like a local hdd.

the hp msa1000 is the same system but based on fc and defined as san. here i have a serial-port to connect and get some infos, but this port doesn't work with a msa500

You should then be able to use tools like top and esxtop to gather more detailed disk counters. HP also has a performance management pack that you might be able to leverage.
