Sloow SAN performance. How do i confirm the vmfs format?

Best practice says to format SAN storage via the VI client.

This is done so the blocks and the SAN chunks line up correctly.

It also provides more efficient storage management for both the initial provisioning and the ongoing management of the shared storage resources.

How do i check the san and the vmfs format is aligned correctly??

Current situation from our under performing SAN:

block size 4mb

file system 3.31

If i format it with esx 3.5 and then upgrade to 4.0 i dont need to upgrade the vmfs version?

Also where else should i be checking for performance problems and bottlenecks?

1) if you created the VMFS volume via vCenter it is auto - aligned.

2) blocksize will not make a difference in performance.
