Setting up the VCB proxy

I have what I would think to be a simple question. How do I setup the VCB proxy on my windows server 2003 machine? I've read the "Virtual Machine Backup Guide" on how to do this but it only talks about it and does not say how to set it up.

What i'm I missing?

Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way. When the doc is saying "Proxy Server" it is only talking about the Windows server I attach my SAN LUNs to? I don't have to run an .exe or a command to tell the Window server that it is the Proxy server correct?

Just by allowing my Windows server and ESX servers to see the same LUN is what it means to setup the proxy server?

Yes its talking about the Windows 2003 Server (proxy server) this is the server that performs the backups.

The VCB proxy must have access to all the SAN arrays containing VMFS volumes (Datastores) with virtual disks on them.

So then you would :

Install the VCB Framework

Install the Intergration Module (if using one)

Configure the module to work with your 3rd Party backup software.

What are you using?

If your using esxRanger its very simple.

Basically yes, and you'll want to ensure that the servers see the LUNs with the same LUN IDs.

Here's another doc to look at.

We use TSM (IBM Tivoli) for our 3rd Party backup software.

so where would I get the following to do the following?

Install the VCB Framework

Install the Intergration Module

I would be willing to try esxRanger, is it free?

I have just setup VCB working with TSM and HSM and its working a treat.

You need to install the VCB Framework, you dont need the intergration module. The Framework can be downloaded from here:

http://www.vmware.com/download/vi/

Obviously you will need an account.

Then install esxRanger, you can download a trial version (30 day I think) from www.Vizioncore.com
