SVmotion / Storage VMotion

Can someone please show where this command can be found? I am on 3.5 server, but "svmotion" is NOT there. Where do we execute this command from?

I did look at the ESX 3 Configuration Guide, but all it says is putty, which I have been using the whole time, but I see NO reference to svmotion.pl and doing a grep of svmotion is not found, there is no file called svmotion.pl. I have looked everywhere.

Where do I run this command?

You need the RCLI for this, if you download it the PDF is included as a separate download...

Remote CLI Download - http://www.vmware.com/download/download.do?downloadGroup=VI-RCLI

On the welcome page of you connect the client directly is the option to download and install the RCLI appliance but you will still need the client parts from the download site listed above

You can also download RCLI for windows or Linux. That way u can administer your ESX servers remotely.

And when you find out how horrible the syntax for svmotion is, you can download the script I wrote at:

http://vmprofessional.com/index.php?content=vmpmotion

It makes the process less painful. Even though the script could use some refinement still.

SVMotion graphical user interface

[SVMotion graphical user interface|http://www.ntpro.nl/blog/uploads/svmotion.jpg]Alexander Gaiswinker created a storage vmotion graphical user interface and posted it in the VMware community. Instructions: Install the VMware remote CLI (www.vmware.com/go/remotecli) on a Windows machine to the standard path (program files...) Save the file vms.pl into the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware VI Remote CLI\bin directory. Save the svmotionGUI.exe somewhere on the machine. Double click it!

Thanks for GUI program...

Here's a few things I have found:

- The version of the RCLI on Windows takes double-quotes ( " ) around the vm parameter, not singles ( ' ) as all the doco states, and will generate a INVALID VM FORMAT error until you correct it.

- Number matter what quote you use your datastore cannot have a ":" in the name. This was a fun discovery as I was trying to see if I could move a vm from local to SAN storage and back again, yeah just for kicks, and 3.5 puts the ":" in any local VMFS storage by default.

Rant:

- For this to be such a hailed function of 3.5 why did it take me a hour to research how to use it, download a command-line utility, and then spend a hour or so figuring out that try double-quotes, etc. Is this game, is this Second-Life VMware?

- Has anyone gotten Update Manager to work? Mine is not aware of any available updates out-of the box and doesn't list any and doesn't find any hosts to survey either. Probably something stupid but this muse be part of the game as well. I haven't gotten all the Golden goblets, and silver spinning discs, etc.

- Did VMware look at the Vista product naming and say, hey let's do that with ESX? 3i, 3i installable, 3.5....How about 3-Old, 3-Premium, 3-Upgradeable, or something like that. I'm not a marketing whiz but maybe someone from XBox or Playstation can help us out...

Have a good weekend (Dr. Phil was right... I do feel better...)
