SVMotion causes high VCPU load in RHEL

Hi!

Has anyone experience high CPU load during SVmotion ? We have noticed that RHEL 5.3 (x64) is almost inaccessible. Application does not work, system can be pinged but SSH logon prompt needs 30 seconds to appear. Before and after storage migration machines operate normally (5-10% load).

Our environment configuration:

ESX 3.5u4, VC 4.0.0, SAN Storage (EMC CX)

Martin

Hi

Make sure it is not your storage that is saturating over the migration process. Storage vmotion is much like having a snapshot added to your VM. A lot of disk transfer going on as well. Please check the transfer speed and IOPS on your LUN(s), and check that they are not near max performance.

I wrote a blog on snapshot impact, showing that this can impact your disk performance heavilly (in one case only 5.5% of read performance was left for the VM during snapshot removal). You can find it here

Hello Martin,

Just curious to know if you ever found a solution to your problem ?

We are facing the exact same issue.
