SNMP not showing any VMWare specific metrics in ESX 3.5

Hello,

We have recently installed an ESX 3.5 environment within our company. One important feature that we wish to use is the SNMP support. I have followed the instructions on setting up and accessing this service and I am able to see some values within the machine. I know the service is started and the firewall is allowing it, as there is no problem with viewing data from the iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt area.

However I can't see any of the VMWare specific ones. I believe these should be located in iso.org.dod.internet.private.enterprises.vmware. Firstly, have I understood that correctly?

I am looking for help or any advice on articles I can follow to understand why I am able to see some values but not the ones that I believe ESX provides for VM specific information. I have done numerous searches across the internet and followed as many of the guides as I could, so I apologise if this is a very simple mistake. I am a beginner and am aware this could be obvious to many of you.

Any help that you could give me will be greatly appreciated.

This doc is for an older version but it may help

http://pubs.vmware.com/esx254/admin/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=admin&file=esx25ad...

I would try to do an snmpwalk on the string in the doc above and see what info you get.

Are you configuring for ESX or ESXi? For ESX, have you enable the MIBs?

Thank you for the responses so far. I have not yet resolved this issue.

I am using ESX 3.5, not a version of ESXi.

Following this instructions on pages 94 and 95 of this manual, I have checked to see that a reference to libSNMPESX.so was in snmpd.conf. It was already present.

As already stated, I know the SNMP service is running, as I'm able to see other, non-VMWare specific data. Therefore I'm at a loss as to why I can't see the additional ones I need.

My apologises,

It seems that after following the instructions I referred to in the previous post, plus adjusting the firewall, etc, that it was working. My mistake was in the tool I was using to check this. It needed references to the MIB files before it was able to see the information that VMWare supplies.
