SNMP Hardware Monitoring

Hi,

I have been reading on enabling and configuring SNMP in ESX 3.x. While there is heaps of info on monitoring virtual machines and their usage etc, etc, etc. What I am tryng to determine is, does this extend to monitoring the hardware? And what I mean by monitoring the hardware is if for example a power supply fails, or a fan dies do you also get alerting on these sort of issues, or do you need some form of third party software?

Thanks for ya help ...

Major hardware vendors have hardware monitoring available for use in ESX. Not too certain about that, but we are a Dell shop, and OpenManage works well with ESX to monitor the hosts.

We are a HP Shop and use HP Systems Insight Manager to monitor our hosts. This works for our windows hosts, and ESX.

It is simple to set our HPSIM to monitor for SNMP alert traps and alert us when a drive/fan/memory goes faulty.
