SAN Drive into VM

All,

How do I present a SAN LUN to a vm? I remember RDM (raw dev mapping) but that was a year or so ago in training... I thought I remembered a new way...

?

If you are using iSCSI then you can add a virtual NIC on the iSCSI subnet to the VM, and use a guest iSCSI initiator. This will allow the VM to laydown the filesystem and have exclusive access to the lun.

Hi Jim, are you using Fibre Channel or iSCSI?

To summarize the process, you zone or present your SAN LUN to each ESX host that the vm will live on. Once the host are able to see the new LUN, you edit the vm settings, add disk, add raw device mapping, select your LUN, and you're good to go.

RDM is still a valid (also for vSphere).

Or you can use NPIV (for FC) or a software initiator inside the VM (for iSCSI).

In vSphere there is also the pass-through way.
