Running ESX 3.5 on ESXi 3.5

Hi!

I have HP DL380 G5 with installed ESXi 3.5 on it. Works fine.

But at this moment I've interested in VI3 and tried to install ESX 3.5 on ESXi 3.5 VM, in the begin of setup process, when X starts, ESX reporting that there is no network adapaters.

Does anyone have this trouble also?

I've tried to search around of communitites - didn't find an answer.

Be sure to configure your ESX VM with e1000 ethernet adapters:

ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000"

Though this is not a supported configuration, you should be able to successfully run ESX 3.5 under ESX 3.5, but only on AMD hardware with RVI support.

ESX is a bare metal OS, I don't know of a way to run ESX on top of ESX. My suggestion would be to download VMware Workstion 6.5 and you can run ESX that way.

You can find may articles on the web on how to run ESX inside of VMware Workstion.

Fortunately, with your help I've installed ESX 3.5 on ESXi 3.5. Smiley Happy

Even without AMD hardware, as I wrote before the server is HP DL380 G5, it's quad-core Intel Xeon 5420.

One more time pardons for my inattention, the answer was given in parallel topics of community.

Thanks!

ESX strikes back. Smiley Happy

Server eats 500 Mb of RAM and all of 2,5 GHz, starts booting already for 2 hours. Permanent load of CPu and RAM, but a little bit effectively.

That's why you need an AMD host with RVI.
