Is it possible to remove a disk of a running VM ?
I found a post from 2006 saying a disk can be added when the machine is powered on, but cannot be removed.
Is this still true ? Is there any way around it ?
What is the reasoning for this behavior ?
It is still true, you cannot remove a disk from a running machine, but you can add it (as long as its on the same SCSI controller in the VM).
Removal is probably just a limitation of the software for now. on top of that, windows Enterprise handles the add/removal of drives easily enough but Windows Server std can get really bitchy when a drive goes missing.
The answer was not complete on the post - you can add a virtual disk while the VM is powered on but you must power OFF the VM to remove the disk -
