Remote Desktop Client issue

Hi,

When i access a virtual machine (running Win XP) from RDC i get a 16 bit resolution on the VM.

I am not given the option to increase the screen resolution thru RDC.

...need help in resolving this issue.

We are using Vi3 ESX 3.0.

if you are using mstsc check that its properties are not set to use 16bit only

Hi,

he's referring to your rdp client. If it's MS Terminal Services Client then you can set depth on the 'options' tab of the client.

I think it defaults to 16bit.

Just like he said, load remote desktop client, before connecting to the VM click the Options button and then click the Display tab.

Hi

The following are the display settings for the Remote desktop client.

1) Remote desktop size :- set to maximum

2) Colors :- High Color (16bit)

the problem still exists.

Hi

Installed RDC 6.0 on both VM as well as the remote machine...but no luck.

Is it possible to change the RDC display settings (from 16 bit to 32 bit) from an XPP machine to an XPP machine?

You need to set the display properties on the VM when locally connected i.e. through the VI client,

to 32bit before it will be available as an option under RDP. The local machine display propeties will

also need to be set to 32bit before you can use it in RDP. I'm running from a w2k source at the

moment so the best I can get to a 32bit winXP guest is 24bit (the highest setting on my source machine).

i have set the display to 32 bit on the VM.

The RDC 6.0 comes with the option of 32 bit display setting...with all this being set i still have trouble setting the display settings of the VM to 32 or 24 from the RDC client initiated from the remote machine which is a XPP PC.

Have you simulated this from an XPP Remote machine to another XPP machine?

I have also tried out the above option without VMware it does not seem to show me the option of 32 bit it only displays a 16 bit option...

I've run a test again, and although I can select 32bit resolution at both ends prior to connection,

once connected I'm limited to 16bit. I've checked this article, which does imply that 32bit is only

available when the target is running vista or longhorn.

Open up the Registry Editor (Start -> Run -> regedit) and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp

Change color depth to 4.

Reboot Windows XP to have the change take effect.

Thanks for the regedit instructions paramd, I was having the same problem, and this fixed it :smileylaugh:

Is there no way to get FULL 32bit on XP using RDP v6 ? or is it only on vista 😐
