you can also find another console plug in here as well as some others.

hope this helps?
I apologize for not being more clear. What I meant is that I thought I saw a plugin that allowed one to open a remote SSH session to the console of an ESX host. For instance, I currently use Putty. I could have imagine it and may be simply dreaming of such a thing.

What the OP is talking about is the Firefox console plugin that is downloadable from a VMware server installation. It allows one to get a console (text mode or desktop - not an SSH connection) to the virtual machine.
On Linux, this was the only way I was aware that I could access the console/desktop of a virtual machine when e.g. ssh/VNC wasn't possible. But:
If you install VMware player, it too allows one to do that. Just start it as:
vmplayer -h <esx-host-ip> & enter the username+password
Or the more elaborate:
vmplayer -h <esx-host-ip> -u <user> -p <passwd>
If you've used the remote console, you'll find that it looks almost indentical from this point forward. It presents you with a list of the guests running, you pick one, and you're good to go.
But alas, also the VMware player's -h command line parameter is hidden/undocumented. But it works for now. See also:
Alternatively, I think the only bet is to download VMware server, install it, and find the .xpi files on your computer somewhere...
Thank you for your response. I will play with both options but it looks like the player solution may be the key.
actually, the plugin you are looking for does exist.. you arent going crazy..
I've been using it for awhile
it adds a console tab directly into VIC, which gets you an SSH session to the hosts
not a huge deal, but nifty to have in there..
Plug in name: Console
Vendor: lost creations
version i have: 0.1.5.0
Description: Add an SSH-enabled tab named 'Console' when a host system is selected
it worked like a champ in VIC 2.5 connected to esx 3.5
I believe i still used it in vsphere 4.0, but it was flakey and I had to re-enable the plug in pretty often
and now on 4.1, the plugin doesnt seem to want to enable at all
It really doesnt seem that lost creations is still around
but i would expect other people to have released similiar plugins
