Processor support for ESX Server

Hi,

In VI3 Systen Guide ( http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_systems_guide.pdf ) the type of processors supported are given as

  • Both single and dual-core Intel processor support in Page 4,5

This statement is a bit confusing for me what type of Intel Processors are supported? , is Pentium-3 or Pentium-4 processor supported ?

Could any one clarify my doubt.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

The supported processors refer to the server model. Find out which processors are available for the server model. For these processors both single and dual core are supported.

For example on page 5 a Dell Poweredge 1850 with single or dual core processor(s) is supported.

I don't think you can get a server with a Pentium 3 or 4 processor.

Cannot remember exactly from when I did the exams but the minimum processor for ESX is 400 or 500 MHz which means you should be able to install on a pentium3 server. Might be able to virtualise a few VMs running windows 98 Smiley Happy

Also All Hardware vendors have a ESX compatibility list. And show what processors are not only supported but also what systems will work with vmotion.

Just use google to find one . Also I think the only intel supported CPU is a XEON.

Look at this
