You need a VMFS Datastore to create VMs.

You add a Datastore through Storage - Add Datastore.

But it looks like you only have SATA/IDE Disks.

You need a SCSI Device(local attached or in your SAN) to store a VMFS Partition.

No, you can only install ESX on SATA but you need a SCSI Device for VMFS
