Patch Update 2 over network?

I have a SATA CD-rom player, and had to resort to installing ESX over FTP (because ESX tripped real badly on the SATA). Can I do the same with the Patch to Update 2? Over FTP, I mean (or HTTP).

Thanks.

I patched my U2 server over ftp with no problems. I placed the patch on our FTP server, unzipped it and used a pearl script to pull the patch down to ESX and patch it successfully.

We do not use VUM, so all of our patches are done by downloading the patch(s), placing it on our FTP site and patching that way.

Hope this helps.

Yes, most helpful, thanks!

So, you're actually patching directly from the console, right? (sorry, this will be my first patch). I thought you had to install over ftp; but if it can be done AT the console itself, all the better even! That should make it even easier! I plan to take these steps (at the console):

cd /var/updates

md5sum upgrade-from-esx3.5-3.5.0_Update_2-110268.zip

unzip upgrade-from-esx3.5-3.5.0_Update_2-110268.zip

cd upgrade-from-esx3.5-3.5.0_Update_2-110268

esxupdate update

That seem right to you? I really don't want to mess it up! Smiley Happy

Thanks again!

Can anyone confirm these steps, please? I'd like to get this update on the way, as soon as possible!

when patching make sure your host is in maintenance mode.

Thanks. That went a lot easier than I thought it would. Smiley Happy

yes, looks good.

When the patch is insatlled you can run a console command and find out if it was installed successfully

esxupdade -l query

This command will give you a list of all patches that have been applied to your Host. Also, the build number of your host will probably change.

Thanks. Yes, I had already done that (see output below). And I also verified the Update 2 patch, and everything went 100% (or so it reported). It's just that I'd never seen these new processes before. I guess, upon reflection, there're part of "Updates to CIM and Pegasus".
