Hi we are using esx 3.5 for my vmware environment .
I created one virtual machine win 2k3 and installed oracle 8i on tht.
every thing was fine and installation was perfect but when i start sql plus and try to login on that it is showing ORA-12560 TNS protocol adaptor error.
please help me out.
This error is completely unrelated to VMware, it's a problem with Oracle configuration.
Maybe this can help you: http://www.cryer.co.uk/brian/oracle/ORA12560.htm

Thanks for reply.
but if same OS and oracle configuration works on physical machine then why they are not working on virtual machine. how can we say that this problem is related to Oracle.
Is any different configuration require to run Oracle 8i on vmware esx virtual machine.
If you've got this error - then configuration is not the same. Check all again - you probably missed something in Oracle configuration, maybe in Windows network configuration.

Thanks for Reply,
Please tell me what things i need to check on windows network configuration.. one more thing we noted is that when we did P2V FOR ORACLE MACHINE and restart the machine on vmware still it is showingg same error when we open oracle sql lpus console and try to logon.
As mentioned before this is NOT a vmware issue. Oracle runs fine under VMware.
Did you open tcp port 1521 on your firewall?

We Re not using any firewall.
and windows firewall is also disable
Can any body tell me that
DO we require anything special about network ,service, ports to run oracle 8i on vmware esx 3.5 virtual machine.
Nothing special is needed for a plain jane setup of Oracle, the setup is exactly the same virtual as physical.

I did the same thing then why tns 12560 error is coming while i m trying to connect through Sql plus on local virtual machine.
and one more thing is that all things are working when i installed 10 on another virtual machine.
Hi Thanks for reply,
but we came to know one very big problem is that if icreate one win2k3 template with oracle 81 installed and deploy machine from that template .......first of all their is no entry of oracle in add and remove prgram unde control panel ,,,second if this tns problem comes most of the times when we work on Cloned machine ...rest if i installed oracle 8i on win2k3 machine as oracle user thing are fine for me...please tell some about this clone isue ..
Have you cloned physical servers with Oracle, and not received the same problem? Are you running a customization along with the conversion?

Yes once I convert physical server into virtual machine with no big custimisation accept ram and harddisk size.
I meant, have you cloned physical to physical before to validate that it wouldn't cause problems with that type of conversion? The same as you're seeing right now. Doing P2V conversion is similar to a physical to physical. The only thing that is really changing is the physical vs virtual hardware. All else is the same. Make sure you've removed all references to your old network interface which is no longer valid on ESX's vm. Make sure that your listener is bound to the new interface.
