New ESX 3.5 install not seeing all hardware

We just installed 3.5 on a new HP DL385. The server does have a 3rd party scsi card installed (I don't remember the make) with a tape drive connected to it. I cannot get the Virtual Infrastructure Client to see either this scsi card / tape or the host's DVD drive.

With the SCSI card, When the server boots, I can see the scsi card and the tape drive on the bios load screens. With the DVD drive, I can ssh into the server and mount it. Yet, neither device is listed as a resource in VI. I did try rescan storage adapters in VI, but only the RAID controller is shown.

This exact same hardware configuration works without issue in 3.0X - all the hardware is found and seen in on the host.

I guess my question is, with the additional security features in 3.5, is there some setting or command I need to run to enable access to these hardware devices? If not, could someone point me toward the resources (documentation or driver repository) I need to get started solving this issue?

Yes, I'm a bit of a newb.

Thanks you,

Stephen

The dvd should just work. However, the storage adapter should be listed here: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi35_io_guide.pdf

It would be helpful to post the make & model of your controller & tape drive

Hello,

Im sorry I cant help with your issue, however, Im in a very similar boat with my external 320 tape drive. I have a DL385 as well with a scsi controller and tape drive attached on 3.0.2 though. When it boots up it seems to recognize the drive and tape, however, Im unable to get the VM to recognize the drive. Not sure if im using the right scsi ID. I added a scsi device to my VM, but does the scsi ID need to match that of the ESX host? Is there some other step I may be missing? I know you mentioned you had no trouble getting your configuration recognized on your 3.0.x setup, so Im assuming i should be able to as well.

Thanks

The scsi card needs to be non-raid and in the compatability guide, its good practice to set the scsi ID to match the Host.

It also depends on the OS flavour of your VM, from my experience with 3.0.2 Windows backup VM could see the Tape drive, RHLinux backup VM either couldn't or locked up trying.

I resolved my RHLinux backup VM lock up problem by upgrading ESX to 3.5.
