I'm looking for some clarification.
In ESX server when you go to Configuration Tab -> Network Adapters there is the Networks Column. What does this column represent? I'm not a network guy and I'm just trying to figure out whats going on here.
Currently the column says 10.10.1.1 - 10.10.1.63.
Please advise.
Thanks
This column is a common source of confusion.
A more appropriate description of the column would be "Network Hints".
What is happening is that the ESX server is sending out broadcasts off of the given uplink/NIC, and based on the responses received the range of IP addresses responding is displayed under the "Networks".
The information is pretty much insignificant and may be ignored.

The networks column has been described in the past by a VMware employee as a network hint. It is basically a guess by ESX of what subnet it is connected to and is based on broadcast traffic. Sometimes it can be way off especially if you have VLANs. It in no way limits the IP range that you can use for your VMs. It's only there to help and does not restrict IP traffic to the range displayed.
That sounds chatty. Any reason in particular that it needs to do this?
Anyway to turn it off?
Thank you for the quick response!
