Monitoring ESX/VC by OpenView, Tivoli, etc.?

Hi,

Can we use, say HP OpenView, to montior ESX & VC servers? Give alarms, utilisation reports, physical servers going down, etc.? Maybe even monitor the more critical VMs / tasks within a VM?

Thanks for the help.

Regards,

If you need to monitor the vmware host itself you should install hardware agents and configure them (for HP hardware you need hpasm stuff and for openview you would need ovo software i suppose).

On the other hand, if you want to monitor virtual machines and vmware specific alarms i'd suggest you to configure snmp trap alarms inside virtualcenter/hosts and then point them to tivoli / openview. You will need also to register the vmware MIBS to make them readable to your monitoring software.

Hi,

Talking about virtual infrastructure reporting, I think in some way you can use Veeam Reporter by Veeam. The new version of the program allows you to get reports about ESX, VC or VI networking, storage and configuration.

Download the trial version: http://veeam.com/veeam_reporter.asp

Read about the release: http://www.vmweekly.com/news/20070328/1/

I take it that the commerial mgmt tools will recognise VMware MIBS? Or do I need some wizard to write scripts?

Thanks for the info. Will take a look at it once we start rolling.

If your tool understands SNMP it will import MIBS in some way, for example, in tivoli you would do this:

I'd also suggest you to give a look to HP Insight Manager which is free and it's quite easy to configure as an alarm gateway expecially for snmp enabled devices.

If you have Openview you can use the nworks SPI to monitor the whole VMware 3 infrastructure.

This will monitor ESX hosts going down, Host CPU, Mem, Disk (including VMFS) , VM alerts, stuck, powered off, on, No Tools, etc.

Also full VirtualCenter Alerting and VC events are forwarded to openview.

You can read about the SPI here:

nworks spi for vmware is a certified hp spi. see here: http://openview.hp.com/partner/isv/nworks_prod1.jsp

Netuitive is another provider of 3rd party monitoring solutions.

We just rely on the OpenView agent running on the guest OS.
