Migration error: failed to resume on destination

The VC 2.0.1 failes to preform a migration in our ESX 3 environment. However it does not apply for all the VMs.

The error on the destionation host is: "Error enountered while trying to restore the state of group monitorLate from file "(null)"."

This is probably because you create a group named monitorLate only on one ESX HOST or there is something different in the group configuration.

check it.

That's really weird. The "group" referred to in the error message is a checkpoint group, not a VC-defined group or anything. Basically it's just an internal thing.

Can you paste in the vmware.log for the VM that's failing to VMotion? Thanks.

Ok, looking at the code I'm guessing this might have something to do with the NX bit. Are you VMotion'ing between machines that have/don't have the NX bit?

Hi,

strange behaviour: I have 4 HP DL580 G4, totally identical. Except for the BIOS firmware. We received them all 4 at the same time with also identical BIOS firmware. Then HP replaced one of the machines and that had a new firmware version. When trying to Vmotion to that machine the result of the compatibity verification was "incompatible CPU, 0x80000001, edx". After setting the "Hide the Nx flag from guest" flag to true Vmotion to the different machine was possible. I verified this behaviour by updating BIOS firmware on another machine. So I tried to Vmotion all VM from the "old" machines to the new ones, set on every VM the "Hide Nx flag" and started Vmotioning. But only some machines were successfully migrated. The others failed with above error message. To make things worse now I wasen't able to Vmotion between the two "old" machines. After changing the Nx-flag back to expose that was possible again.

The different firmware versions are:

2006.09.08 (new)

2006.07.28 (old)

I now have the problem of updating a live environment with the great Vmotion technology not working \*sic*

Any ideas?

After downgrading all BIOS firmware to version 2006.07.28 VMotion works again as expected.

I'm going to open a support call at HP for help with the different behaviour of the different BIOS versions.

Finally I found a solution for the whole problem:

The new firmware had a different behavour regarding the Nx flag. I had to enable this setting in the BIOS options (for HP DL580 G4 BIOS: Advanced Options -> No-Execute Memory Protection).

Now Vmotion works without problems.

Forgot to say: A look into /proc/cpuinfo showed that although both machines had same BIOS settings (Nx disabled) the one with the new firmware didn't have the Nx-flag set.

I have the same issue, however I am trying to migrate 'back' to old hardware that does not have an updated BIOS release that supports the 'NX' flag. The kicker is that I was able to vmotion the virtual machines off the older server, but now I can not migrate them back to it!

I have already used the below link to adjust the advnace NX properties, but I still end up with the same error:

"failed to resume on destination"

Any thoughts? There has to be a way to disable all of the CPU checks to get this to work...

Apparently no workaround. I created support ticket w/VMware, after 2+ hrs with "Escalated Engineer", this is their recommendation: "due to CPU

compatibility constraints between the HPDL580 G2 and G4, Vmotion will

require a reboot[/b] of the VM's in order to mask the NX bit." or change BIOS setting as previously noted. Thus far, all suggestions I've seen require a shutdown, which voided VMotion feature[/b].

If you need Vmotion between the G2 and G4 I'd adjust the BIOS setting. Then you "only" have to shutdown the VMs once and set one setting instead of changing multiple VMs.
