I am not a IIS expert, so I am looking for resources that I can pass on to a work friend.
They have ISA reverse proxy servers, pointing to various IIS frontend servers which in tern connect to numerous other servers through a DMZ
I cannot seem to find any presentation or best practice for this type of envrionment.
Do any of you have this configuration ?
Are reverse proxy's still required these days ?
Should Windows NLB/Clusters help?

Sounds to me like your asking the question in the wrong forum, a Microsoft IIS forum or a networking one might give you more feedback

Ok

Um... go to your local bookshop..
I know this is not the kind of answer you are looking for, sorry for playing devils advocate, but your question doesn't seem to have anything to do with ESX. Unless you forgot to tell us that detail.
Maybe this will help:

Yep
Are reverse proxy's still required these days ?
They weren't required in the old days and are NOT required now. However sometimes there's a good reason to use them. So it depends on the requirements.
Should Windows NLB/Clusters help?
For what?

Yes, badly worded questions.
I would like to take advantage of the bus-speed by having IIS frontend servers connected to backend SQL.
Thank you for the links, I will use them as a starter for ten.
The question really was relating to how best to use IIS in a vmware environment. Ideally I was looking for something similar to vmware's doc on how to setup exchange for example

My reply wasn't much better
Hey techies and communication isn't always a good combination.
My reply should have added that if you have specific questions then do let us know about it.

It is always a good idea to separate the SQL server from a IIS one, in addition the ISA server can also cache requests. Personally i'd prefer using apache for this, but everyone his own poison.

Esiebert provided some links that discusses several different setups.
Afaik there is no specific document about this right now.
"Treat any VM as you would a physical machine" is a slogan that comes to mind.
